George Carlin said, “the caterpillar does all the work, but the butterfly gets all the publicity.”
When I (Farmer Donald) was approached about doing a photo shoot and short story for a new magazine, I jumped at the chance. Shortly thereafter, a professional photographer, model, modeling coach, and make-up artist all showed up at Yummy Tummy Farms ready to work. Since I did not know anything about professional publicity work, I knew I was along for the ride and my sole job was to pay attention, learn, and promote my brand. I mean, what new business turns down free publicity?
The photograph below is the photograph that was released to the public today and I think its very flattering. It’s exactly what we were hoping for: classic 50’s era appeal, home-made aesthetic, and tells a story about our products. When a new business gets an opportunity, businesses that want to succeed, take advantage of the free publicity even if it means sacrificing creative control. Again, I was along for the ride and trying to learn as much from the experience as possible.
This free publicity has had some unintended consequences of examining the image that I want to project in relation to my brand and logo. Is this the image that I want to present to the entire public? I have two seemingly clashing goals and that is to appeal to an adult audience and, in the future, teach children about gardening, farming, and where food comes from. Clearly, the pin-up girl image is not appropriate for children. How should I resolve this conflict?
The way I decided to resolve this conflict is to use this pin-up photograph in conjunction with my dot-com and dot-net web address domains. I will utilize my dot-org web domain address, in the future, to set up a whole different web page and branding association. I believe that different images, logos, and brands are appropriate for different audiences; moreover, all entrepreneurs should know there markets. Similar to the caterpillar, the farm apprentices and myself are doing all the work and similar to the butterfly, the model is going to get all the publicity.
This is my solution to my conundrum, how would you solve these two opposite goals?
