Last night 4/4/13, I (Farmer Donald) gave a very well attended presentation at the Gilroy, CA Public Library on Sustainable Farming and Gardening. Last night was my fourth presentation of six classes that the Santa Clara County Library is hosting under a banner series called Focus on Food. Ironically, I was so busy setting up the presentation and answering great questions from attendees that I neglected to take a photo for posting; moreover, I am much better at doing than documenting. I have two more presentations coming up, one at the Morgan Hill, CA Library and one in Saratoga, CA Library and I will take photos of both events and post something for everyone to read.
One of the audience members took issue with the fact that I stated, for long term success in your garden, you should use organically acceptable methods to control deleterious insects. I advocate using OMRI certified products to control bad insects; for example, aphids, whiteflies, and leaf miners. One audience member claimed that he never sprayed anything on his garden ever and year after year is able to grow a beautiful food garden. I believe that while it is possible to grow insect-free gardens year after year, it is unlikely and most probably just luck. Even a broken clock, is correct twice a day. I asked the Gentleman to please write a book on his methodology for growing a pest-free garden year after year; after all, if he has a secret growing method in which he avoids even using organic controls on his garden then I want to read that book!
Do you think its possible to grow a pest-free garden year after year which yields great colors, sizes, and flavors? Let me know what you think?
